Soup Up Your Social Media with Images
Think about this for a minute…
Every minute on Facebook there are 510 comments posted, 293,000 statuses updated, and 136,000 photos uploaded.
With the steady rise of social media, we are exposed to much more information than we were only 20-30 years ago. How do you make sure your audience sees you? How do you make sure you are heard through all the noise?
How do you stand out from everyone else?
What catches people’s attention online?
Understanding how our brains work can help us engage more of our audience on social media platforms. So what do we know?
Humans are visually oriented creatures. Our brains are able to quickly interpret the clues received from our eyes and make sense of them and the world around us. We are more likely to remember information that is presented in a visual way, in fact we are drawn to images in articles, typically only reading 20% of the text on a page. Studies also show that colour increases a readers’ attention span and recall by as much as 82%. This doesn’t mean that written text is not a good way of relaying information, only that if we use images to help us present that information, our audience will be more likely to be drawn to it, will probably pay attention long enough to retain what we would like them to know, and there is a better chance they will engage with us.
In case you are still unsure of the impact images have on engagement…
Twitter retweets increased by 35% for tweets with images and Facebook posts with images have a 37% increase in engagement (likes, shares, comments)
Searches for “social media images” continue to increase, and show no sign of slowing down according to Google Trends.
Sounds good, right?
Use images to increase engagement
Knowing that images can do so much for our online marketing is great, but how do we put this into use?
Ideas on how you can use images in your online marketing:
- Promote events, sales or specials
- Share quotes to inspire and motivate your audience
- Share tips or facts
- Share your story so your fans can relate to you
- Encourage your audience to share their story
- Ask a question
- Promote a contest
- Share an update (moving location, now opening, new hours, new employee…)
- Celebrate a client’s win
- Create a visual shareable header for your blog post
- Step-by-step images for instructional posts
Simple rules for using images in your blog or social media posts:
- Use images that are relevant to your topic
- Put the most important information in an image – what do you want your audience to remember?
- Use graphics to break down information and avoid an ugly “wall of text”
- Look at your social metrics – which of your previous posts have garnered the most engagement? What do they have in common? Look for patterns.
- Create graphics in the appropriate sizes for each platform
- Do make sure your images reflect your brand (voice, personality, logo and fonts)
- Don’t use too much text
- Don’t only use social media for selling – engage your audience (80/20) rule
What do you need to start making your own images?
You don’t need any kind of expensive software like Photoshop to create images unless you want to get into some serious effects and customization. Canva is a great free online option for creating your own images to share or use in your blog posts. If you want more options than the free version has to offer, Canva’s business level subscription has extended features like flexible sizing options so you can easily adjust one design to fit on multiple platforms, the ability to save your custom colours and upload your own fonts.
